A collapse of epic proportions left us with one of the most memorable photo's in British Open history. Frenchman Jean Van de Velde held a 3 stroke lead heading to 18 with the Claret Jug firmly in his grasp, needing only a double bogey to win the major championship outright. JVV blasted his tee-shot into the opposite fairway rough, then inexplicably pulling out a 2 iron and knocking his 2nd shot into the grandstand where it then ricocheted into the thick grass. He then compounded his misery by again attempting to go for the green by hitting out of the fescue and having his ball land in the creek which guarded the green.

This brings us to the infamous picture of Van de Velde wading through the creek with his trousers pulled up to his knees. JVV ended up taking a drop after reconsidering his plan to play it out of the creek and carding a triple bogey on the hole to enter a playoff with 2 other golfers including eventual winner Justin Leonard. This is one of the biggest choke jobs in sports history and perhaps the stupidest run of judgement in golf history.
